Questions On Integration

Most of the questions given below relate to the MS Access version of the Smart Guest Book. If you have chosen the MS SQL Server version then there is very little chance of you not being able to install it successfully :-)

  1. When I try to sign the SmartGuestBook, the counter ticks to 200 and displays - Failed
    OR
I can't submit my comments to my Smart Guest Book, it insists 'please refrain from using bad language in theguestbook, thank you!'.
    • Please re-check if your server supports ASP pages. If it doesn't then you can't get the guestbook to work on your site since it is a pre-requisite. If it does then please write to us mentioning your URL and we'll tell you what to do next.

  2. Hello, I am using Tripod to host my site, I have done the MS Access instruction and all the changes but when I pull up SmartGuestBook, it just sits there and says "Loading Guest Book Entries". Can you help?
    • When I tried to browse your site's SmartGuestBookCode.asp page, it started downloading the ASP page. The reason could be that tripod doesn't supports ASP pages, please check with tripod. If it doesn't then you can't get the guestbook to work on your site since it is a pre-requisite.

  3. I am trying to install/use your SmartGuestBook as it seems to be by far the best Guest Book available. I have inserted the Flash element in my page so that it is constantly displayed but all I get is the front page graphic and a message saying that the guestbook is loading the entries. It doesnt load any entries (although I have manually added some to the .mdb file within access. Can you help ?
    • Here are some suggestions for your problem based on what sort of a site you have (i.e. your own or a free site).

      1. Your Own Site

      Test the following link :
      http://your_site_url/SmartGuestBook/SmartGuestBookCode.asp?size=50&Nav=1&action=new
      &name=SmartWebby&email=admin@smartwebby.com&mess=Great%20Site

If you get an error message:

[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Operation must use an updateable query.

This means your server people need to give write permission to the folder in which your access database is stored. This should rectify the problem.

      2. A Free Site (e.g. under Brinkster.com)

You just have to follow a few guidelines when dealing with Free sites :

      1. Place the SmartGuestBook.mdb file in the db folder under you root directory. (this might be needed to use the guestbook because there is no write permission for other directories on brinkster.com. If you are using some other free service change db to the specified database folder)
      2. Change the path name in the SmartGuestBookCode.asp file to "/your_user_name/db/SmartGuestBook.mdb"
      3. Now you have done everything right. Test out the GuestBook and see if it has put data in it.
      4. If it still doesn't work, then test the following URL:
        http://your_site_url/SmartGuestBook/SmartGuestBookCode.asp?size=50&Nav=1&action=new
        &name=SmartWebby&email=admin@smartwebby.com&mess=Great%20Site

        If you get an error:
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Operation must use an updateable query.

Then there is no problem with the code. Its just that the 'Free Site' hasn't properly set up your db folder with write permission. Now just write an email to their support and they will rectify your problem.
